powdermill fishing on the borders of Sussex and Kent

Powdermill reservoir is 56 acres of excellent fishing on the border of Sussex and Kent. Constructed to provide water to the historic town of Hastings, Powdermill has a reputation for hard fighting trout of exceptional quality.

Powdermill has a wonderful Mayfly hatch - if you're planning to book with us in the Spring, try and tie up with the Mayfly hatch. There's nothing like rising a trout to a perfect imitation fly. Gamekeeper Vic Partridge is usually available to give tips and info on this fascinating water.

There are some big fish at the venue - in July this year, two fish of 10lb 12oz and 12lb 5oz. Small flies such as buzzers are working well.

Powdermill has an interesting history. Originally forming part of the Great Sanders Estate the name is derived from the fact that there was an 18th century Black Powder (gunpowder) manufactory on the site. The mill used to grind the powder was driven by water from a mill pond formed by a dam across the original stream. The mill was the scene of three deadly explosions before its eventual closure. One of the original pair of mill stones may still be seen, half buried, at the eastern end of the dam. Prior to its use as a powdermill the site held an iron foundry which predated the attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade Britain.

The reservoir is open all year round for fly fishing from the bank, with boats available from early March to the end of October.
