LONDON
Most of our guests from overseas spend at least one
day of their visit sightseeing in London. Although we are based in a
rural part of the countryside, we are only ten minutes drive from
Haywards Heath mainline train station. This line goes straight into
either London Victoria or London Bridge stations, both central to the
city. The journey time is approx. 45 minutes.
We make all the travel arrangements, and transport you between Old Cottage and the station.
We can also book tickets for theatres, music concerts etc, subject to
availability. We kindly ask you to pay for tickets when the booking is
made. There is a complimentary London Time Out magazine provided for
you at the cottage.
BRIGHTON
Brighton
is the most exciting and extraordinary seaside city in Britain. It is
full of character, superb shopping, and an abundance of culture. It is
home to the famous Royal Pavilion, the Palace Pier, pavement cafes,
cinemas, live music venues, lively arts scene and a vibrant nightlife.
We are only a 30 minute drive from the seafront.
POOH BRIDGE
One
of our most popular trips. AA Milne lived in the nearby village of
Hartfield, where he wrote his famous series of books about Pooh Bear
and his friends. Hidden away in the Ashdown Forest is the actual bridge
where he invented and played 'Pooh sticks'.
The village of
Hartfield is home to 'Pooh corner', the best and most comprehensive
Pooh shop in the world. At the shop you can buy maps and guides that
will show you where all of Milne's 'enchanted places' are located,
including Galleon's Lap, The Heffalump Trap, Roo's Sandy Pit, Five
Hundred Acre Wood and in a neighbouring valley, 'Where The North Pole
Was'. And don't forget, it's traditional to leave some Pooh sticks on
the bridge for the next visitors...
THE BLUEBELL RAILWAY
The
location for the filming of 'The Railway Children', The Bluebell
Railway was the first preserved standard gauge steam-operated passenger
railway in the world. Fifteen minutes from Old Cottage, it has the
largest collection of steam locomotives after the national Railway
Museum and a collection of carriages and wagons unrivalled in the UK.
Travelling through the Sussex countryside with the steam from the
locomotive drifting past the windows really feels like travelling back
in time.
We also recommend the Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime dining on
the famous Pullman dining train. The train recreates the fabulous
Golden Arrow which once linked London and Paris with the style and
panache which made it one of the most glamorous and famous trains in
the world. On board you will enjoy fine food and wine served to the
standards of yesteryear. If you are staying with us around the
Christmas period, the Bluebell's 'Santa Specials' are a must. Festively
decorated carriages and stations, a choir singing carols around a tree,
and a traditional Christmas menu make for a nostalgic and elegant
Christmas past.
LEWES BONFIRE NIGHT
If
you are staying with us in the first week of November, this isn't to be
missed. With celebrations dating back to the mid 1800's, the nearby
town of Lewes has one of the largest and most famous firework displays
in the UK. Formed of seven bonfire societies, the torchlit procession has to be seen to be believed.
Wrap
up warm, the pubs are all open, and the fireworks that follow the
procession through the streets are absolutely spectacular. ^ TOP
